Season 1 | Episode 1: Sort Of Gone

Sort Of

Drama/LGBTQIA+, Canada 2021

“One of the most wonderful series gems of recent years” (epd Film) As a genderqueer person, Sabi Mehboob (Bilail Baig) is in the midst of searching for their own identity: on the one hand, the youngest child of a large family with Pakistani roots, the true millennial acts as the de facto “adult” in a wealthy hipster family while working as a nanny. Their job as a bartender in an LGBTQ bookstore, which also runs a trendy café, is almost a side gig. Unlike their sister and roommate Aqsa (Supinder Wraich), their own mother has never seen Sabi's true self. As if this family and professional chaos weren't enough, Sabi also feels like he's in a constant state of transition – from his own gender and sexuality to his living circumstances and developing ideas for his future. It's good that, despite all these problems, Sabi can turn to best friend 7ven (Amanda Cordner) as a rock in the storm. When Bessy, the mother of the nanny family, falls into a coma after an accident, Sabi can no longer separate the two spheres – and that's when the problems really begin... The Canadian comedy series “Sort of” (represented on filmfriend with two seasons) with its captivating, down-to-earth stories was a huge hit with audiences, critics, and TV award ceremonies: In 2022, “Sort Of” was nominated for the category “Outstanding New Television Series” at the 33rd GLAAD Media Awards. The series also received a Peabody Award in the entertainment category in the same year. With 13 nominations, it was the most nominated television series at the 10th Canadian Screen Awards – and won the award for best comedy series. "The difficult balance of addressing the uniqueness of minorities without romanticizing belonging to a minority as the sole defining characteristic of a character is still one that is rarely achieved. “Sort Of” makes a valuable contribution to the representation of non-binary people by not constantly harping on it, but instead focusing on a warm-hearted, clever, and funny person. One who, incidentally, has no time for traditional gender roles. As such, Sabi navigates not only their own chaos, but above all that of their fellow human beings in entertaining episodes lasting around 20 minutes each. Because the dream of Berlin bursts faster than they can say “KitKat Club.” One of the many charming insights that “Sort Of” [...] accentuates is that much in life is in a constant state of flux. That the search for one's own identity is a lifelong one that certainly does not end with gender issues." (Arabella Wintermayr, on: taz.de) Sabi moves to Berlin with his_her best friend 7ven to finally be able to live freely in Europe. But the bicycle accident of Sabi's employer Bessy throws a spanner in the works.
