Alexandre Desplat

The concentrated power of film music

French composer Alexandre Desplat has breathed the necessary life with his music into almost 200 films . Born on 23 August 1961 in Paris, he studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and at Le Ateliere UPIC, after which he studied orchestration in Los Angeles. His love of film music began with John Williams: He was particularly captivated by the musical violence Williams gave to the space opera "Star Wars". Initially, Desplat worked for European directors such as Jacques Audiard, Marleen Gorris and Patrice Leconte, but soon his preference for lyrical, elegant orchestrations and precise dramaturgy aroused worldwide interest. Desplat's breakthrough came with the score for the historical drama THE GIRL WITH THE PEARL EAR RING (with Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth), since then he has composed for Roman Polanski, Stephen Frears, Wes Anderson, Ang Lee, David Fincher, Tom Hooper, Terrence Malick, Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow and George Clooney. Many of his film scores have been showered with awards, and he has also been nominated for an Oscar many times, which he finally received for the first time for THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. He finally received his second OSCAR for THE SHAPE OF WATER.
